Thanks to a collaborative effort between Men of Vision and Reunion of the Ages, ball players at the Talley Ward Recreation Center will be safer as they compete. The groups purchased “legacy mats” – safety mats emblazoned with the logos and messages of the two organizations.
The mats have been hung under one of the court’s two main basketball goals and will protect players who crash into the wall chasing down a loose ball. Instead of hitting the hard wall, now they will crash into padding.

But the mats serve as more than mere safety equipment. “They show community service legacy logos from both Men of Vision and Reunion of the Ages (Voices of Morristown College). We are preserving that legacy while ensuring safety and inclusive environment for future generations of athletes, students and community,” the organizations said in a written statement. “”We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this initiative and we look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of this community center.”
The Men of Vision, a local nonprofit, is a group of men dedicated to working together to achieve goals throughout the Lakeway Area. “Our very first meeting was held in August of 2019,” president Dennis Oxendine said. “It started with myself and a group of guys brainstorming because we wanted an organization for men who make a significant impact in our community.”
Their mission statement is “Men meeting the needs socially, economically and civically.”
With this mission statement they aim to help the needs of the community in a variety of ways.
The Reunion of the Ages is a local organization dedicated to “preserving, honoring and celebrating the history and heritage of former black educational institutions in the Morristown-Hamblen County area in conjunction with present and future needs of the community.”
